Day 41 – Sault Ste. Marie to Spragge – Tuesday July 31st, 2012 – 174 km

We had a big day today with 171 km so we planned to leave early and a get a head start on the day. I woke up at 5.30 am and wrapped up my tent in morning darkness. The weather forecast had tailwinds all day so I wasn’t keen on rushing out of camp.

I left camp around 7.40 am I headed solo today for the first 40 km where I stopped for a break. I was expecting the town to have a restaurant or coffee shop but unfortunately there was nothing so I stopped and ate a banana on side of road. Soon Keith, Ron and Michael joined and we did that part of the ride, which was surprisingly tougher and hilly than expected. We stopped again in Bruce mines and went to a food store where I got regular milk and a bag of Doritos that was followed by my first PBJ sandwich.

From here on we had a tailwind and I continued on my own and was doing an average of 30 kmph. With music in my ears and a bounce in my feet I didn’t stop in Thessalon (88km). The next town on map was Iron Bridge (117 km) so I stopped at a food store and got a ½ L of chocolate milk accompanied by my cheese sandwich and left over Doritos. Soon Keith, Ron, Michael and Robert came as well and all ended up getting chocolate milk. As we were waiting it started to rain heavily again and we all waited out the rain which ended in 15 minutes.

It was still 1.30 pm and we were done 117 km so I took my own pace again and continued until I stopped in Blind River. I went to Tim Hortons to get an iced cappuccino but their machine was broken so I ended up having a medium iced latte. With final 28 km in sight and a tail wind I made the time in almost an hour. I was in camp at 4 pm and I set up my tent by the river. I went to the swimming pool and enjoyed the time there and followed it by some potato fries at a vendor outside campground.

Dinner tonight is Vegetarian Chili topped with peanuts, green salad and raspberry cheese cake for desert. I spoke with my parents tonight and am just chilling with others in camp and about to call it a night.
