Day 42 – Spragge to Sheguindah – Wednesday August 1st, 2012 – 134 km

After yesterday’s 171 km ride, today’s 134 km seemed like a breeze. I slept in and woke up at 6.10 am and since everyone in camp was taking things relatively slowly, I followed the same plan. Breakfast today was French toast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit. I wrapped up my tent and then got ready for the day. Keith was on cooking duty today and so we waited around for him to get ready.

We left camp around 8.45 am and started to a pace line with 10 km rotation. With the tail wind and mild rolling hills it made for a wonderful ride. We passed the town of Spanish (20 km) and continued on to take our first stop at Massey (42 km). We stopped at a family run restaurant for a breakfast. I ordered fresh waffles topped with whipping cream and strawberry. The waffles were so soft with perfect strawberry sauce that they simply melted in mouth. After a long stop we left the town and decided to take the main highway which promised better roads. We reached Espanola (72 km) and decided to continue on. From here on the terrain became rolling hills and sometimes it got tough climbs. By this time the tail wind became a head wind and it became a tough last 40 kms. We stopped just past Whitefish falls for a late lunch and I had a banana and a PBJ sandwich. After the stop I rode solo and got in to rhythm and pedaled on my own towards the bridge to Manitoulin Island. Just after crossing the bridge there was an ice-cream stop and I stopped there for some ice-cream. I had a pistachio almond and then death by chocolate (chocolate ice-cream, black chocolate chips and chocolate swirls).

The last 13 km in to camp I rode on my own and got in to camp around 3.45 pm. I set up my tent and left it open to dry out from the dampness this morning and went for a shower. I rested before dinner and ate spaghetti with veggie sauce, salad and rice crispies for desert.

Tomorrow it is only a 60 km ride and then we take the ferry to go to Tobermorry. My dad will pick me up tomorrow and I will be taking a few days off to stay back home.

Unicorns, apparently, do exist.

Best Waffles so far

Not a bad sign ,eh!
