Today I was meeting my Dad in Tobermory and combined with
the fact that it was only 54 km to ferry I was really excited and was looking
forward to the day. I woke up a little later than usual as it was a relaxed
day. Breakfast today was eggs so I had bread and margarine, oatmeal and some
yoghurt. I made 1 sandwich for the road just in case and we set off on a windy
morning at 8.10 am.
There was a nice climb out of campground and combined with
the wind it made for a tough start of the day. Slowly the winds picked up and
it started raining slightly. The blowing of rain in our faces forced us to stop
and put on our rain jackets. About 30 km in the ride it started pouring down,
then heavy showers, then thunder and lightning and a little bit of hail. In the
midst of all this the quartz like stone chips on the side of road which stuck
to our tires because of the rain resulted in numerous flats and we were often
stopped by them. We rolled up near the ferry and went to a restaurant for
breakfast, I was hungry as we didn’t stop for any food (because of the rain). We
were soaking wet and I was cold, damp and hungry, so I took off my shoes and
socks. I ordered a hot chocolate,
grilled cheese with tomatoes and side of home fries. The food was great and we
caught up on some of the Olympic events going on.
We left for our 1.30 pm ferry and reached the truck at 12.45
pm and as cyclists we board first. The ferry ride was a bit bumpy because of
the winds and we settled in the front deck of the ferry. I was feeling little
nauseas because of the bumps and went to the cafeteria and slept on the bench
after not completing the French fries I ordered. We reached Tobermorry without
much trouble and rolled in to the camp. My dad arrived about ½ hour later with
100 samosas which disappeared amongst 30 hungry cyclists in a few seconds. I
caught up with my dad on our ride back and was tired and exhausted from the
headwinds.
