Day 29 – Kenora to Caliper Lake – Thursday July 19th, 2012 – 128 km

I slept well despite my tent being on an uneven ground and me being rolled off my mattress. I woke up around 6 am and got ready to go around 7.45 am. The instructions today were pretty simple, merge back on to the main highway and follow it till highway 71, make a right turn and make another right turn at end of day in to camp.

We were in prime Canadian Shield territory and it was winding hills all day long with a minor headwind. In fact, the wind actually helped in cooling us down with today’s heat. We had our first stop at 40 km by the side of a road and had half a PBJ sandwich and a banana. The next few stop was at Sioux narrows and it was the only place with any services to get some food and water refills. We stopped at a small food joint and soon it was nestled with many more cyclists within a few minutes as people started coming in. I had a chocolate milk shake and ate my PBJ sandwiches. Posed for a few pictures with native art and then just before leaving had another iced cappuccino. The terrain was constantly rolling and it did settle for a bit but for most day we were progressing at a very decent pace. It was fun to use the momentum from a downhill and climb up the next hill. It became tricky when the uphill was long and there was no real downhill.

Nonetheless, I got in to camp around 2.20 pm, my second best time in to camp and was one of the first few people to get in, so I helped unloading truck. I set up my tent quickly, as even ground was prime property today, and arranged clothes. I went to the beach, had a dip in the water, very refreshing although mirky, and had a good time just splashing around in the water. I got out and found that I had more time on hand so I had my left over sandwich and a banana at the beach. I still had some time so I laid down in sun on a slide and soaked in the sun and tried to get a nap, which felt very relaxing. After that I went for a shower, which was very clean and had warm water, and got back to camp to find most of the riders in to camp. It was only 4.30 pm by then and so I decided to get caught up on most of the trip journal entries.

Dinner tonight was Gypsy soup (vegetarian) with tuna sandwiches (pita bread, hummus and cheese for me) and I went to camp store for a drum stick ice-cream cone. It is 8.30 pm as I am writing this and I am ready to hit bed soon as I would like to wake up early and get an early start to repeat a day like today tomorrow. Getting in to camp early, while still enjoying sightseeing, seems to be a very good idea.
