After getting all that free time yesterday by getting in early in to camp, I wanted to repeat it today. I got up today at 6 am and started wrapping up my belongings. Since the showers were a bit too far from the camp area I skipped on it and got everything else ready. Breakfast today was pancakes, oatmeal and some fruit and yoghurt. Just as we were leaving Keith noticed a flat in his tire that developed overnight. We left camp at 7.45 am and the hilly terrain just kept continuing from yesterday.
The first part of the ride was tough with some long and
steep hills but soon our legs got used to the terrain and it became a bit more
bearable. We pedaled hard for 30 Kms with the wind against us and then formed a
pace line with a decent speed. About 5 Kms in pace line I had a wheel rub with
Ron (in front of me) and came crashing down on the side of shoulder. Luckily it
was gravel and it was only a few bruises to the hip and elbow. Since it was 35
km we decided to have a break and I gathered myself back to normal. I had half
a sandwich, few chocolate biscuits and a banana. At Km 50 we made a turn to go
east on Highway 11 (which if you follow long enough in to southern Ontario,
becomes Yonge Street) and the wind became in our favour. After that the road
got a little flatter and we were able to hold our pace for longer and a decent
speed. We stopped in town of Emo, ON and I got 1L of chocolate milk and the
other half of my PBJ sandwich and some biscuits.
Michael and Keith had left earlier so I rode with Ron from
Emo and we had some great speeds going in to town of Fort Frances. It was only
a few blocks to USA (Minnesota border), but since I didn’t have my passport
with me a visit down there would have been unnecessary and it was out of
question. We were trying to find Michael but couldn’t find it and ended up
going to Tim Hortons. I had a lemonade smoothie and ate my hummus and pita
bread. We pedaled through the last 40 km and got in to camp at 2.30 pm. I set
up my tent, took a dip in the lake( whereas some other decided to go for swim
to other side of lake), took a proper shower and had some spiced
buttermilk(yoghurt, salt, cumin/coriander powder and water shaken to a juice
like consistency) to cool down in the heat (32+C).
Dinner tonight is tofu chilli with left over soup from
yesterday and since its Merryn’s birthday we have an ice-cream cake tonight.
Tomorrow we are on cooking duty and the terrain is rolling hills, all 155 km of
it.
